This is the story of Makwa, the son of escaped slaves who runs away from a cruel master and is befriended by a pirate, Captain Harmer, and joins his ship. As the ship cruises the southern Indian Ocean in the middle of the 18th century, Makwa learns to sail with the pirates, to attack and plunder with them, and to sing their songs. But in his heart Makwa doesn’t accept the cruelty of the pirate way of life. Eventually he finds a way for both himself and the captain to escape into a more stable and kinder world. |
